Preferred Workers - Working for You
L&I has revamped their preferred worker program. In the past, the current employer wasn't eligible for preferred worker benefits for their injured workers that were permanently restricted from their job of injury. Essentially, the current employer could offer permanent light duty or the injured worker could obtain preferred worker status and apply for work elsewhere. Now, L&I is incentivizing the program to help employers retain their employees, while still benefiting from the program!
One of the major concerns, when considering returning an injured worker to work, is them getting re-injured. Through the re-vamped Preferred Worker Program, L&I will actually pick up the costs of any new claims that occur while the worker is certified! Preferred Worker certifications are good for 36 months of work and expire 5 years from the date of claim closure.
Along with many other benefits offered within the program, and savings of time and money of finding and training new staff on the company's behalf, the safeguard against possible new claims is a great built-in safety feature.
