Safety Programs and Injury Prevention

Good trucking companies strive to have a strong safety program. Safety is what keeps our companies in compliance with the FMCSRs. It's what makes sure our workforce is drug and alcohol free while performing safety sensitive functions. It's what ensures our drivers are fit for duty physically and legally. 
The part of our safety program that isn't measured in Federal audits or State Patrol audits, is injury prevention. Keeping our drivers safe isn't just about ensuring they're “clean” or their in compliance with their hours of service. No. It's about making sure that each night they are sleeping in their bed, not in a hospital. It's seeing them earn a paycheck to support their family, not receive partial wage benefits, because L&I only pays 60% in some cases.

Injury prevention is the part of our safety programs that tell our workers we want them to have the most basic right; good health. A company's injury prevention program should be emphasized just as much as their other safety issues.

How? Get away from your desk or office or building, and get out there. Experience the work we ask of our drivers and see it through their eyes and your own. Watch how they work, and look for safety concerns through the eyes of someone that can ask “Why?” or “How?” Sometimes we do things that we've always done, or that we were trained to do, because we have always done it that way. To be able to look through a fresh perspective is an untapped gift in a lot of companies. Another way to strengthen an injury prevention program is to analyze trends. Most safety programs analyze accident and cargo claim trends, but we can do this for injuries, too. WTA Group Retro participants can request trend reports from the WTA.

Safety says, “Do things the right way.” Injury prevention adds, “because we want you to sit at the dinner table with your family. We want you to retire healthy.”
